this fan. Loreena could have easily put together a
cheesy traditional Christmas album of old Christmas
standards but she doesn't. Instead she carefully chose

original language Dickens used in the 1840's. Dickens' language
remains humorous,
descriptive and insightful and not inaccessible to most modern
readers especially with the use of a good glossary. This is
a great read aloud for families
at Christmas time and also a great introduction to Dickens
and other Victorian writers. Don't settle for an abridged
version.

author uses the same characters in a lot of her stories and
it took me some time to keep everyone straight. The main character
is Mariah Ellison, almost always referred to as "Grandmama"
in this book. She seems to be a very unlikable lady.
Grandmama
lives with Emily her granddaughter in London. The story begins
when Emily is telling her that she and her husband are going
to France for Christmas and that Grandmama will be spending
Christmas with Emily's mother who is Grandmama's former daughter-in-law.
The older lady is furious, but she makes the trip.

I loved this book as a child and am still enchanted today!
My children want me to read it year round. Five stars are
not enough for this book. Not only is the story entertaining,
but it teaches recyclying on a young childs level.
If you want a book to pass down through many generations,
I strongly recommend Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree!
